This design is realised during a project in London in collaboration with Matter of Stuff and the
Carrara Design Factory.
The designers of Matter of Stuff are both Italian architects, who work in London. They came up with
this project because they noticed that in Carrara, the marble center of Italy, a lot of marble is labeled
as waste. This because of accedents, critical customers or rest material from several projects.
With these facts, they asked a group of designers to make a product out of the rest material. All
designs are focused on the Italian cuisine and the wineculture of the region. And we payed extra
attention to the minimalisation of the costs of producing this design.
The products are realised by the Carrara Design Factory and below you’ll see our design for this

The design we created for this project is a set of serving boards to present small dished like the typical
Italian anti pasti. Because the marble has natural colors and patterns, the colorful ingredients get the
attention they deserve. Another benefit of the marble is the fact that it absorbs temperature. When you
cool or heat the boards before using them, they are perfect to serve warm or cold dishes.
The design of the serving boards is inspired by the Toscan hills, the area where they source the marble.
When you place the different forms behind each other, the layers look like the layers you’ll see if you
drive through a Toscan scenery. To highlight this layer effect, we used two different colors of marble.
We created shapes that makes it possible to realise two boards with one cut. This lowers the costs of
producing the serving boards. The four shapes you see above are made in white and grey marble and
after producing the boards we switch them to create two sets, both with grey and white boards.
The photo above shows the details of the boards. They are 1cm thick and nicely finished to prevent them
from getting damaged and you from hurting yourself. The topsides are polished which makes it easy to
clean the set.
